BCAT Information Technology Student is Continuously Learning
When asked what makes BCAT unique, Cyndy N. does not hesitate in crediting BCAT’s instructors as key to BCAT’s success. Cyndy is now working as a Vulnerabilities Assessment Specialist at M&T Bank after completing training in Information Technology at BCAT. Cyndy credits her instructor’s ability to bring the real-world training to the classroom that prepared her for her new workplace and new responsibilities.
“Since our instructors are also working in tech jobs, they bring their knowledge of the working world and the kinds of issues we would likely face on the job and that is so helpful,” recounts Cyndy. Now that she is employed at M&T while continuing to take IT classes at BCAT, she brings her work challenges to the classroom and relies on her instructors to help her navigate solutions.
In addition to the technical training, BCAT provided Cyndy with guidance and training on seeking and landing a job, including building a resume, practicing interview skills, and promoting networking opportunities. She emphasizes the supportive and non-judgmental approach that BCAT’s instructors take, making it easier to ask questions and learn more.
Cyndy notes that one of her favorite parts of BCAT is the connections she made with other students in her classes. Whether through group projects, group chats, or just attending class together, students get to know each other well and begin to rely on each other. She says that her fellow students often helped each other with coursework and shared networking and job prospects, making the heavy course load easier to manage.
“You have to be committed and invest in yourself,” says Cyndy, referring to classes four days a week and additional homework assignments to verify that students are ready to pass certification exams. “BCAT invests in its students as well, ensuring that we have technical training and also the skills to land and keep good paying jobs.”
A graduate of Buffalo State College in Computer Information Systems and Economics & Finance, Cyndy continued to improve her skills and technical knowledge. She learned about BCAT when she was taking a course through Goodwill and was impressed by BCAT’s offerings and welcoming atmosphere. She is continuing to expand her knowledge, taking additional IT classes at BCAT that she will complete in August. Cyndy knows the importance of continuing education in the tech field that is constantly changing. She appreciates that M&T Bank encourages additional professional development to stay current in the field.
Cyndy’s focus is on an eventual career in cybersecurity, “Every day I learn things that I can apply at work, and I can bring my work challenges here. It has been and continues to be a great experience.”
