BCAT Youth Artists Release Spring Publication Showcase

insta1

June 30, 2021 — Our youth artists released their spring publication to the community today which showcases their unique talents and hard work over the past three months.

The publication highlights contributions of more than 50 youth enrolled in 3D Printing, Art, Filmmaking & Photography, Music Production and Mobile App and Development.  Throughout the trimester, youth completed: a major public art mural for Horizon Health Services, created fully functional mobile applications that will soon be available to use in real life, received their SME certification in Additive Manufacturing Fundamentals, developed .GIFs and created a “How to” guide, and developed their own music tracks.

Our youth accomplished all of this while navigating remote/hybrid school, isolation, and an overall lack of normalcy. BCAT is proud to have been a safe place our youth could come to express their creativity, discover new talents, and be a part of a supportive community.

BUFFALO, JUNE 22, 2021 —  BCAT is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kamalah Poles to serve as our youth arts and technology director.

Kamalah brings 10 years of experience working with Buffalo’s youth. In her previous role, she worked as the program director for the Williams-Emslie YMCA providing oversight and strategic direction of the facility’s program.  Prior to the YMCA, she served as the program coordinator for the Boys & Girls Club.

As BCAT’s youth arts and technology director, she will be charged with creating new partnerships and collaborations with youth-centered organizations, and Buffalo Public and Charter schools. Additionally, with the support of her team, she will forge new relationships with organizations throughout the city that will serve as mentorship and internship sites for our youth.  In the immediate future, she will  implement trauma informed and LBGTQ+ training programs to our staff to ensure we are successful in delivering the right care, empathy and supports to the youth we serve.

Kamalah will lead a team of three: Kevin Kline, curriculum designer and teaching artist, Caroline Lewis, social worker, and Matthew Bosque, college and career counselor.  Under Kamalah’s guidance, this team will work to make sure our youth have a safe and inspiring place while they’re at BCAT,  build a tactical plan for when they graduate, and retain a committed support network  as they become independent adults.

BUFFALO, JUNE 3, 2021 —  This past March, BCAT announced a new scholarship-based medical billing and insurance upskill preparation program. This initiative is generously funded by Bank of America and will increase access and opportunity for adults looking to grow their careers in high-demand health care fields. Additional funding was provided by Bank of America this June.

“BCAT is proud to offer a course that includes the essential and additional skills adults currently working in health care need to advance their careers,” said Gina Burkhardt, CEO, BCAT.  “We are so very appreciative of Bank of America’s support and commitment to increasing employment opportunities for adults, job stability, and the ability to attain a family-sustaining wage more quickly.”

The program includes 120 hours of classroom instruction at BCAT in areas such as technical education, certified billing exam preparation, and work-readiness skills needed to ensure students are better prepared to navigate and excel in today’s workforce.

“Bank of America is dedicated to driving economic mobility and social progress in Buffalo, especially at a time when the tireless work of our healthcare professionals is of critical importance,” said Ted Janicki, Buffalo market president for Bank of America. “This innovative program will create new opportunities for adults in the medical field, including a path to family-sustaining wages and stable employment. We are grateful for our partnership with BCAT and we look forward to seeing this collaborative program come to fruition.”

For the inaugural class, BCAT will be accepting 12 adults with the first course running from March to September 2021. A second course will be offered from October to April in 2022. Both workforce development programs will be held in the evenings to accommodate work and family schedules. Interested candidates should apply at bufcat.org/apply-now.

BCAT Youth Unveil Mural of Hope

BUFFALO, MAY 21, 2021 — Buffalo Center for Arts & Technology (BCAT) and Horizon Health Services (Horizon), formed a unique partnership to bring a youth-designed and installed public art mural to the Bailey-Kensington neighborhood.

The mural is located at one of Horizon’s mental health and substance use centers, and has been designed and installed by eight youth artists enrolled at BCAT.

Mental health disorders are common in the United States among teens and young adults. 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses develop by age 14.  BCAT and Horizon hope that through this collaboration they build community awareness and offer access to treatment to those who are affected.

Mayor Byron Brown joined Horizon President & CEO, Anne Constantino, BCAT President & CEO, Gina Burkhardt, Erie County Mental Health Commissioner Mark O’Brien, and the community to unveil this beautiful and important major work of public art.

BUFFALO, APRIL 26, 2021 — Buffalo Center for Arts & Technology (BCAT) and Horizon Health Services (Horizon), announce a unique partnership to bring a youth-designed and installed public art mural to the Bailey-Kensington neighborhood.

The mural, which will be located at 3020 Bailey Avenue, one of Horizon’s mental health and substance use centers, will be designed and installed by six youth artists enrolled at BCAT.  The youth, who will spend approximately 30 hours concepting, designing, and finalizing the mural will be mentored by notable Buffalo muralist, Tyshaun Tyson, and will also have the benefit of college and career counseling services provided by BCAT.

“We are so fortunate to partner with Horizon Health Services on this major outdoor public art initiative,” said Gina Burkhardt, President & CEO, BCAT.  “Our youth are skilled artists who deeply understand the benefits of artistic expression and the experience a mural can bring to a community.  The youth will create a unique visual depiction that tells a story of hope to anyone working through mental health challenges.”

Horizon Health Services, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation that provides hope and healing for individuals and their families dealing with substance use and/or mental health disorders, approached BCAT in the summer of 2020 following a significant rise in pandemic-related mental health issues.  In an effort to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health — especially among today’s youth — the mural will bring positivity, brightness, and a message of hope to the Bailey-Kensington neighborhood.

“We are grateful to collaborate with BCAT on the Mural of Hope at our Bailey Kensington Recovery Center,” said Anne Constantino, President and CEO of Horizon. “The dedication, thoughtfulness and passion that went in to the design and execution with their youth encompass our shared mission and commitment to quality care and life changing services for the community we serve.  We are confident that this message will impact not only our current patients and family members but provide continued awareness and hope for our community members each and every day.”

The physical installation of the mural has begun with an unveiling target date of May 21. This date celebrates the importance of mental health awareness month.  Mental health disorders are common in the United States among teens and young adults. 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses develop by age 14.  BCAT and Horizon hope that through this collaboration they build community awareness and offer access to treatment to those who are affected.
